The Rutland Police K-9 Unit was established in 2018 with grant funding from the Stanton Foundation and has since maintained operations through fundraising and private donations, providing a crucial service to the community at minimal cost to the taxpayer. Rutland's first K-9 team was comprised of Officer Matthew Fenuccio and his German Shepherd K-9 partner, Cooney, who was named in honor of fallen Officer Sean Cooney.
Currently, our K-9 team is comprised of Officer Justin Lawlor and his German Shepherd K-9 partner, Storm. The team completed the Boston Police K-9 Academy patrol school in July 2023.
Our department strives to keep our K-9 unit connected to the community. Our K-9 teams love showing off their skills and always likes an opportunity to show people what they can do.
Our K-9 teams attend a 14-week patrol school at the Boston Police K-9 Academy. Some of the skills that they are trained in include tracking, article searches, building searches, apprehension and handler protection.
Our K-9 teams also complete a 6-week narcotics detection school at the Boston Police K-9 Academy. The K-9s are certified to detect all illicit and illegal drugs, including cocaine, heroin, crack, methamphetamine, black tar heroin and ecstasy.
Our K-9 program is supported in part by the Rutland Police K-9 Foundation, a registered 503(c) charitable organization that works to make sure the K-9 Unit gets everything it needs. Donations made via any of the links on this page go directly to an account managed by the K-9 Foundation.
