The Rutland Police K-9 Unit was established in 2018 with grant funding from the Stanton Foundation and has since maintained operations through fundraising and private donations, providing a crucial service to the community at minimal cost to the taxpayer. The unit is comprised of Off. Matthew Fenuccio and his partner, K-9 Cooney, a German Shepherd. Cooney is named in honor of the late Officer Sean Cooney.
K-9 Cooney has an excellent temperament and enjoys meeting members of our community and doing demonstrations. Cooney loves showing off his skills and always likes an opportunity to show people what he can do. If you're interested in meeting Cooney or setting up a demonstration, contact Officer Fenuccio at mfenuccio@rutlandpd.us
Officer Fenuccio and Cooney attended a 14-week patrol school at the Boston Police K-9 Academy. Some of the skills that they are trained in include tracking, article searches, building searches, apprehension and handler protection.
K-9 Cooney and Officer Fenuccio completed the 6-week narcotics detection school at the Boston Police K-9 Academy. Cooney is certified to detect all illicit and illegal drugs, including cocaine, heroin, crack, methamphetamine, black tar heroin and ecstasy.
K-9 Cooney is supported in part by the Rutland Police K-9 Foundation, a registered 503(c) charitable organization that works to make sure the K-9 Unit gets everything it needs.
